Sri Lanka is a tropical island located in the Northern Indian Ocean, situated at the southern tip of the Indian Sub-Continent. The island covers a total land area of 65,610 Km².

Climate and Ecosystems

The island's biological diversity is supported by a wide range of ecosystems, including Tropical Rainforests, Dry Zone Forests, Montane Grasslands, Wetlands, and Coral Reefs.

Wet Zone

Receives high rainfall from both monsoons, hosting lush rainforests.

Dry Zone

Characterized by seasonal rainfall and mixed evergreen forests.

Intermediate

A transition zone between the wet and dry climates.

Semi-Arid

The driest regions, found in the far North-West and South-East.

Forest Classification

  • Tropical Dry Mixed Evergreen: Found in Lowlands (0-900m MSL) within the Dry Zone.
  • Tropical Lowland Wet Evergreen: Found in the Wet Zone (0-900m MSL); Includes Sinharaja and Kanneliya.
  • Tropical Sub-Montane: Located at mid-elevations (900-1500m MSL). Features shorter trees with dense canopies.
  • Tropical Montane: Located in the Central Highlands (1500-2500m MSL), such as Horton Plains and Knuckles.

The island features 103 Natural Rivers, including 9 major rivers. Other wetlands include natural Marshes, Mangroves (21 species), and Estuaries, alongside man-made Reservoirs (Tanks) and Paddy Fields.
